  1. THE VIKING'S STONE - A scratchboard drawing, size 8.5 x 11. It appears in the book, "The Compleat Crow," by Brian Lumley, published by Ganley in 1987.

Before I started doing these scratchboard drawings I went to the library and found a book on how to draw on scratchboard. I spent about an hour reading it, put it back on the shelf and came home feeling somewhat prepared for the task.

Scratchboard comes with a white surface or a black one. I used one with a white surface and used black ink to draw the shapes of the objects that I wanted in the picture. Then, with the use of scratch-tools, I scratched lines in the objects to reveal forms and details.

Careful planning is essential because scratchboard is not a forgiving medium, you can't erase a scratched line that you don't want. You can fill it in with ink to hide it, but the scratching surface is gone with the initial scratch, and the filled in ink soaks down into the base paper and is un-removable. But though that area is no longer usable for the scratch-board technique, white ink can be used to repair white lines in those areas.

Although I seldom used scratchboard, I now wish I had used it more, it does produce a special and dramatic visual experience.
